My scientific journey started with a degree in Biomedical Sciences, by the Universidade da Beira Interior, that as an interdisciplinary curriculum which gave me a background in different areas, like Biomedicine, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering.
The master’s degree was also in Biomedical Sciences with specialization in Molecular Biology in Tropical and International Health by the Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in collaboration with the Biophysics Unit of the Universidad del País Vasco.
After a year and a half of working in a project on clean energies, the next logical step was PhD, a tool absolutely crucial for a scientific career.
With a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, with specialization in Microbiology and Parasitology, by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, I spent many years working on the bench with the parasites that cause malaria and sleeping sickness.
During this time, I was awarded the AAAS/Science Program for Excellence in Science. After completing the PhD, joined the clinical trials field working on studies with a tuberculous vaccine. I speak Portuguese, English and Spanish.
